Before the first German payroll: five details to hand over

The first payslip is easier to understand when every administrative handover has an owner.

Separate what exists from what is pending

Payroll usually asks for your registered address, tax identification number, social insurance information, health insurer and bank account. After a recent move, one or more items may still be in process. Tell the payroll contact what you have, what you have requested and the expected date rather than leaving a blank field unexplained.

Confirm the secure channel for bank details. Ordinary email may not be the employer’s preferred route. Check that your name on the account can be matched and never share online-banking credentials.

Read the first payslip carefully

Compare the employment period, gross salary, tax category, health insurer and bank destination with the information supplied. A temporary payroll treatment can sometimes be corrected later, but raise discrepancies promptly and keep the response in writing. For advice about tax liability or a tax return, consult a qualified tax adviser.
